2017-Candlestick Park, Hunter’s Point
For the second 415 Day in 2017, the (S)olidarity (F)orever (C)ollective leaned into the value of resistance and set their sights on Candlestick Park in Hunters Point. "
Social media post for the second 415 Day. This time, giving a clue to the location revealed the night before 415 Day.
The Stick" had been the beloved home of the San Francisco 49ers and Giants since 1960, and for generations of Frisco kids, going to a game was a rite of passage; dollar hot dogs, $5-7 discount tickets, and the magic of watching your team play made it accessible even to the brokest kid in the City.
Candlestick sat at the edge of Hunters Point, a predominantly Black community, and on game days you could always find kids from the neighborhood hustling water, snacks, and candy to fans rolling in off the freeway. Yet for all the love the community poured into that stadium, Candlestick never poured jobs or opportunity back into Hunters Point.
In 2015, the Stick was demolished, the 49ers were shipped off to Santa Clara, and the Giants moved to what is now Oracle Park, leaving the community with nothing but memories and a vacant lot. While the demolition made reclaiming the stadium itself impossible, the park across the street was the perfect place to plant the 415 Day flag, a powerful reminder that Hunters Point still belongs to its people.
